New Madhuri on the block

Kal Kisne Dekha

If director Vivek Sharma’s prejudice for his discovery can be put aside, then his heroine Vaishali Desai is a combination of Madhuri Dixit and Kareena Kapoor. That’s the exact predicament he faced and the man decided to give his KAL KISSNE DEKHA heroine Vaishali Desai, a mixed compliment.

Says a unit source, ”Even though Vaishali had just started her stint in front of the camera, she grew in confidence as the days progressed. Impressed, Vivek was quick to acknowledge her hard work combined with screen presence and beauty. He walked up to an unsuspecting Vaishali and showered her with compliments.

Vaishali was overwhelmed with this kind of comparison. Especially for a new-comer, comparison to the best actress ever on India Screen and current diva was indeed more than expected.

Ask Vaishali about the incident and she gets all red faced, ”It’s something very personal for me and I would cherish that moment. I don’t know how much he really meant that or if he was just trying to boost my confidence. Whatever be the case, it did wonders to my morale. It made me move a million miles ahead at the beginning of the shoot itself.”

As she enters Bollywood, she would have to get used to the compliments coming her way. How is she looking at differentiating between the real and fake compliments?

”By going back to my family every night”, says Vaishali, ”For me, they are the biggest critics in my life. They are very appreciative when I do something good and would be the first to tell me when I err. Whatever I am today, it’s because of them. It’s their grooming of me that has helped shape up my character. They have told me quite clearly that flattery doesn’t take one anywhere while criticism mostly helps. All I do is seriously follow their advice.”

Well, that means a new Madhuri on the block.

Day two saw Farah Khan there. She spoke of Bharat and Dorris’ contribution to Bollywood.

Madhuri tied knot and got LA bound!!!!

Madhuri

Madhuri Dixit screen icon tied the knot with Los Angeles-based cardio vascular surgeon Dr. Sriram Nene and and the marriage ceremony took place on October 17 ’1999, at Madhuri’s brother, Ajit Dixit’s house in Los Angeles. She married without breaking anyone’s house which is what normally happens in the industry.

Dr Nene is a Maharashtrian Brahmin, like Madhuri herself who was born and brought up in USA. The marriage had all the trappings of an arranged marriage. The horoscopes were also matched before the match was okayed.

It is learnt that Madhuri’s brother and the groom were great pals. It was at a dinner at Ajit’s house that the surgeon proposed to Madhuri. Rikku, Madhuri’s secretary told that the wedding was conducted according to Vedic rites with only family members attending the ceremony.

The guest list for the wedding reception was quite impressive except that not many of Madhuri’s peers could be spotted. Shah Rukh and Aamir, the two hotshot Khans with whom she has done several films, were conspicuous by their absence. Salman, however, did attend. But the oldies were well represented. Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Yash Chopra, the Barjatya family and Feroz Khan were all there.

Amitabh Bachchan with son Abhishek, Hema Malini, Anupam Kher, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjay Khan, Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, Sridevi, Sanjay Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Aroona Irani, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Karan Johar, Tej Sapru, Preeti Sapru, Ashutosh Rana, Renuka Shahane, Shilpa and Namrata Shirodkar were among those who were there to wish the Nenes the very best in life.

There were very few heroines though — Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol and Urmila Matondkar were not in sight. Neither were Ajay Devgan, Sunil Shetty, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Sanjay Dutt. Madhuri’s biggest fan, M F Husain did come despite rumours that the celebrated painter was heart-broken on hearing of her marriage two months back. The right foot of Husain — who moves around barefoot — was bandaged. Was it symbolic of someone having stepped on the celebrated painter’s toes?

Jokes apart, Madhuri and Shriram greeted Husain with the same warmth and congeniality they displayed for the over three hours that the reception lasted. In fact, Madhuri was in great form, laughing and smiling as she introduced guest after guest to her husband.

As far as the reception went, it was one of the best organised functions in Bollywood. First, there weren’t so many invitees that it became like a mela. The guests were all welcomed at the entrance personally by Madhuri’s beaming father, sister and long-time secretary, Rikku. Shilpa Shirodkar, who treats Madhuri as her sister, was also at the entrance to receive the guests. Nobody was allowed to leave without having had dinner.

The venue for the reception was tastefully done up. Flowers were used to decorate the stage for the newly-weds as also the open-air ground. Food served was vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian. A Maharashtrian touch was lent by the inclusion of the traditional Maharashtrian dish of zhunka bhakar in the menu .

This is how Madhuri transformed into Mrs. Nene!!! Rest is history. The couple after 10 years of successful marriage are blessed with two baby boys.

Madhuri-Anil to sizzle on screen again

Madhuri

The veteran film director N.Chandra will join the sequel bandwagon and if the buzz is to be believed, Chandra is planning to recreate the magic of Tezaab by roping in the same star cast Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit once again for the film. No point for guessing…the film will be called…Tezaab 2.

Tezaab was Madhuri’s careers path-breaking film. It established her as the dancing queen of Bollywood with the song ‘Ek Do Teen’…!!!

With Madhuri agreeing to take only selected projects…the question is whether she will agree to be a part of the film or not?
Whether she says yes or no…ask Mr. Chandra will the film with not so young Anil and Madhuri will work on the box-office?

Madhuri Dixit – Bollywood’s Best Actress, Ever!!!

February 4, 2009 4 comments

Everyone knows Madhuri Dixit for her universally contagious mega smile, her frizzy hair and soft looks. She was the all time quintessential Bollywood queen and possibly the “first female superstar” of Bollywood.
She ruled the industry and the nation, armed with her dancing skills and Indian looks. People would que up for tickets for movies lacking mainline heroes to see her. She made dancing and singing significant and watchable in Hindi movies of nineties.

Madhuri braved possibly the worst fashion fiascos through her career and yet emerged on top — a staggering achievement considering those 80s polka-dotted frocks. She’s turned barefoot artists into filmmakers, young Khans into romantic heroes, wasted scripts into eminently watchable films, cornball farce into classic comedy, melodrama into mellow.
Often described as the epitome of grace, Madhuri Dixit is arguably the greatest actress ever to grace the silver screen in India.

Madhuri Dixit is a native of Mumbai, India. She was born as Madhuri Shankar Dixit to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, of a Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin family. Dixit attended Parle College and wanted to be a micro-biologist. She is trained in Kathak for over eight years.

Madhuri Dixit made her acting debut in Abodh(1984). After a few minor and supporting roles, she landed the lead female role in Tezaab(1988), which shot her to stardom, and for which she received her first Filmfare nomination. She then starred in a number of hits that included Ram Lakhan (1989), Parinda (1989), Tridev (1989), and Kishen Kanhaiya (1990).

In 1990, Dixit starred in Indra Kumar‘s romantic-drama Dil, alongside Aamir Khan. She played the role of Madhu Mehra, a rich and spoiled young girl who falls in love with Raja, played by Khan, and later leaves her house in order to marry him. The film became one of the biggest box-office hits of the year in India, and Dixit’s performance earned her the first Filmfare Best Actress Award of her career.

She followed Dil with another line of hits, including Saajan (1991), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! (1994), and Raja (1995). Dixit’s performance in Beta, that of a woman married to an illiterate, well-meaning man who exposes her scheming mother-in-law, won her a second Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! became one of the biggest grossers ever in the history of Hindi cinema. It went on to collect over Rs. 650 million in India and over Rs. 150 million overseas, and won Dixit her third Filmfare Best Actress Award. In that same year, Dixit was also nominated in the same category for her performance in Anjaam, which won her critical acclaim.

After two unsuccessful years, Dixit hit the bull’s eye again with Yash Chopra‘s Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). The film was a major national success, both critically and commercially, and Dixit won her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award.

In that same year, Dixit starred in Prakash Jha‘s critically acclaimed Mrityudand. The film was known for straddling the boundary between a commercial and an art film. It won the Best Feature Film award at the Cinéma Tout Ecran in Geneva and the Bangkok Film Festival.

Dixit is immensly acclaimed and adored for her dance sequences in famous Bollywood songs such as Ek Do Teen (from Tezaab), Bada Dukh Deenha (from Ram Lakhan), Dhak Dhak (from Beta), Chane Ke Khet Mein (from Anjaam), Choli Ke Peechhe (from Khalnayak), Akhiyan Milaun (from Raja), Piya Ghar Aya (from Yaarana), Key Sera (from Pukar), Maar Daala (from Devdas).

In 2002, she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Devdas with Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Her performance was applauded and earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. The film attracted worldwide attention and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.

The following year a film named after her, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon!, was released in which a woman (played by Antara Mali) aspires to become the new Madhuri Dixit by trying her luck in the Bollywood industry.

On February 25, 2006 she performed on stage for the first time in six years at the Filmfare Awards to music from her last movie Devdas. Her performance was choreographed by Saroj Khan.

Madhuri Dixit has been the muse for the famous Indian painter M.F. Husain who considers her the epitome of womanhood. Hence he made a film named Gaja Gamini (2000) in which Madhuri acted. The film was intended as a tribute to Ms. Dixit herself. In this film she can be seen portraying various forms and manifestations of womanhood including the muse of Kalidasa, Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, a rebel, and an incarnation of musical euphoria.

In 1999, she married Sriram Madhav Nene, an Indian doctor who resides in USA. A UCLA-trained cardiovascular surgeon who practices in Denver, Nene is also from a Marathi Konkanastha Brahmin family. She has two sons, Arin (born in March 2003 in Colorado) and Ryan (born on March 8, 2005 in Colorado).

On December 7, 2006, Dixit returned to Mumbai along with her husband and sons to start filming for Aaja Nachle (2007).The film released in November 2007 and despite the critics panning it, Dixit’s performance was well received, with the New York Times commenting about her that “she’s still got it”.Of course the filmmakers can’t erase Ms. Dixit’s considerable sex appeal. To do that they would have to keep her away from dancing. In doing so, Ms. Dixit reminds us that whatever “it” is, she’s still got it. Now stories will have to be found that can show it off.

From danseuse to dunce, from dreamy to droll, from Dayavan to dhak-dhak to Aaja Nachle — not just did she excel, she ruled over the nation with absolute power.
